Privilege

A privilege was something a person was permitted to have, do, or know, by virtue of status or the discretion of an individual or body, as opposed to rights, which were universal.

It was often said that "rank hath its privileges" (TOS: "Arena"), such as that of captain. (TNG: "Samaritan Snare", (VOY: "Night")

Privileges came with corresponding responsibilities, (TNG: "Ménage à Troi") and could be revoked as punishment for various infractions. (TNG: "The First Duty"; VOY: "Retrospect")

Some duties which were seen as undesirable or menial were considered by others to be privileges one ought to be grateful for. (VOY: "Vis à Vis")
