Opossum

The opossum, also sometimes referred to as a possum, was an animal native to Earth.

While discussing a plan to deceive a Gorn destroyer in 2259, Captain Christopher Pike mentioned the possum as an animal that played dead in response to being hunted, something that it had in common with snakes and ducks. (SNW: "Memento Mori") This quality gave rise to the phrase "playing possum", used to describe feigned weakness or death. (VOY: "Flesh and Blood")
