Resembling a small octant (in this case, a nautical instrument used for measuring angle), Octans was a circumpolar constellation visible from Earth's southern hemisphere. Stars in this constellation were located in the Beta Quadrant. (PIC: "Disengage")

The name of this constellation was derived from Nu Octantis' Bayer designation. In Bayer designation, the name begins with a Greek letter followed by a genitive of the constellation's name.
