A nitrogen grenade was a type of grenade designed to freeze everything within a range of ten meters.

Nitrogen grenades were among the weapons covertly distributed by Starfleet to all its starships in 2259, as part of its Gorn Protocols. That year, after the Gorn attacked the USS Cayuga and Parnassus Beta, Captain Christopher Pike revealed these weapons to his crew. Lieutenant La'An Noonien-Singh noted that the grenades would be lethal to a cold-blooded Gorn, but Doctor Joseph M'Benga pointed out that they would be to lethal to anyone. (SNW: "Hegemony")
