Gorn Protocol

The Gorn Protocols were a series of procedures codified by Starfleet in 2259, after Gorn forces were detected massing on the edge of Federation space. Starfleet captains were briefed on the Protocols, and were to disseminate them to their crews in the event of a hostile Gorn encounter.

The Protocols specified measures to be taken in response to Gorn incursions, phaser harmonics adjustments to better counter Gorn defenses at short and long ranges, and tricorder scanner calibrations to compensate for the Gorn's natural invisibility to sensors. Every starship was also provided a Gorn Protocol box, containing full copies of the Protocols along with tricorders, type 2 and type 3 phasers, and nitrogen grenades.

Following the Gorn attack on the USS Cayuga and the Parnassus Beta colony in 2259, Captain Christopher Pike invoked the Gorn Protocols on the USS Enterprise. (SNW: "Hegemony")

...affected areas and should be regularly inspected. The use of surveillance equipment to monitor the areas as well as regular patrolling can be vital. The intention should be to establish secure areas which the Gorn will find difficult to penetrate. Securing by locking or other means of controlling access to unattended spaces adjoining areas could also prove necessary.

It is important that any response to an incident is well planned and executed, and those involved should be as familiar as possible with a starship environment. Therefore, those responsible within the security forces for responding to Gorn attacks against starships, whether in open space or in port, should be trained in the general layout and features of the types of ships most likely to be encountered and starship captains in consultation with Starfleet Command should be cooperate with the security forces in providing access to their ships to allow the necessary onboard education/familiarization.
