A mortar was a type of cannon with a short barrel, designed to launch explosive shells at a steep angle for indirect fire.

In February 2152, a Torothan mortar was used to fire on an abandoned fortress where Captain Jonathan Archer and Commander Charles Tucker III were, having sought shelter there from the planet's harsh desert landscape. When detected by Shuttlepod 2 while that craft flew in the skies overhead, the mortar was ninety kilometers to the south of the craft. The mortar destroyed the fortress but was destroyed in turn by Shuttlepod 2. (ENT: "Desert Crossing")

In 2267, Captain James T. Kirk and Commander Spock used a small, man-portable mortar on Cestus III, exchanging mortar fire with a Gorn captain on a nearby ridge. (TOS: "Arena")

During the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor, the Shakaar resistance cell launched an attack on the Third Assault Group of the Ninth Order with mortars. All four mortar rounds landed in the central compound. (DS9: "Ties of Blood and Water")
