Mercury-Redstone Launch Vehicle

The Mercury-Redstone Launch Vehicle was an American expendable rocket that was in service with NASA in the mid-20th century.

This rocket was used for Project Mercury and was a variant of the classic Redstone missile. It was the first American rocket rated for Humans, and was a single stage rocket which was powered by an alcohol fuel that propelled the Mercury capsules into space.

In 2024, in a gala held for the Europa Mission astronauts, illustrated depictions of this rocket were seen on the displays "Manned Space Flight 1961-2024" and "Mercury". (Star Trek: Enterprise opening credits; PIC: "Two of One")

A schematic of this rocket appeared in the opening credits of Enterprise superimposed over background images, including an image of the Spirit of St. Louis.
Veterans of Project Mercury, such as Gus Grissom, Alan Shepard, and John Glenn, were first carried into space by such a rocket.
