Identification

Identification was the action or process of determining the identity of an object or person. Identification also referred to a specific object used to identify someone or something, such as an identification card or paper.

In 2267, Spock performed a Vulcan mind probe on the Earth probe Nomad and spoke its thoughts: that its creator instructed it to search out, identify, and sterilise imperfections. (TOS: "The Changeling")

In 2268, Spock's tricorder detected a non-humanoid lifeform on the planet Triacus, though it was impossible to make any specific identification as the readings did not correlate with any known information. (TOS: "And the Children Shall Lead")
