The id was, according to psychology, the part of one's mind that was the source of unconscious and impulsive actions.

In 2370, a hologram of Sigmund Freud suggested that Data's dismemberment dream was due to his ego and id fighting for domination. The workmen in the dream symbolized Data's id. (TNG: "Phantasms")
