Dismemberment dream

A dismemberment dream (or, in Data's case, a "dismantlement dream") was a genre of dream in which one experienced being taken apart.

In 2370, according to a hologram of Sigmund Freud, Data's dream in which he cut a cellular peptide cake that resembled Deanna Troi was "a classic dismemberment dream. Or in your case, being a mechanical man, a dismantlement dream." Freud believed it represented a clash between his Human and mechanistic qualities. He also suggested Data had an unconscious desire to possess his own mother. Data found the analysis inapplicable and rejected the psychiatrist's interpretation. (TNG: "Phantasms")
