Hibernation was an inactive condition resembling a deep sleep which some species enter for long periods of time.
In 2260, the USS Enterprise discovered that stellar activity triggered long periods of both aggression and hibernation in the Gorn. With the Gorn about to launch a massive invasion of Federation space, the Enterprise sent them into a long hibernation cycle by creating an artificial X-class coronal mass ejection using the Enterprise itself. (SNW: "Hegemony, Part II")
In 2269, Captain James T. Kirk asked the Elysian Ruling Council not to hibernate the IKS Klothos for a star century as they planned because the USS Enterprise could not leave the Delta Triangle without the combined warp power of the Klothos. (TAS: "The Time Trap")
