Gotham City is a fictional location from the stories of DC Comics, primarily depicted as the home of the superhero Batman, after whom the Gotham City Bats team is presumably named.
"Gotham" is also a historic nickname for New York City; the New York Giants baseball team originated as the "New York Gothams" in 1883. As such, the "Gotham City" appellation may indicate the team is actually based in a neighborhood of New York.
