A communicator chip

A communicator chip was a small communications device used by Starfleet in the 32nd century.

When Commander Jett Reno was taken prisoner by Doctor Ruon Tarka in 3190, she hid a communicator chip up her sleeve before he took her to Booker's ship. She was later able to activate it with a piece of black licorice, owing to its glycyrrhizic acid content, and contact the USS Discovery. (DIS: "Species Ten-C")

Given its size, shape, and functionality, the chip may be an internal component of a tricom badge.
