The name of this constellation was derived from 10 Canum Venaticorum's Bayer designation. In Bayer designation, the name begins with a Greek letter followed by a genitive of the constellation's name.
It was often illustrated as two hunting dogs named Chara and Asterion, held on a leash by the hunter Boötes, as they pursued the bear Ursa Major.
