Brull
Brull was an Acamarian Gatherer in the 24th century. He was the leader of the outpost on Gamma Hromi II, controlling a group of the Gatherers that had conducted raids into other systems and against civilian targets, as well as Federation research outposts. He had two sons, one of them almost the same age as Wesley Crusher.
Following a successful raid where his crew obtained a reactor module from a Federation science station, Brull and his men returned to their outpost and celebrated. Their revelry was cut short, however by the arrival of the USS Enterprise-D and an away team that infiltrated their camp and ultimately forced them into a stalemate. There, Brull met with the Sovereign Marouk, leader of the fractured Acamarian people, who the Enterprise had brought in an attempt to negotiate a reunion and an end to the raids.
Though he initially belitted the Sovereign, she and Captain Jean-Luc Picard managed to persuade him of the truth; Brull dismissed his subordinates, giving him the ability to speak more reasonably to Marouk, and he eventually agreed to accompany her and her servant Yuta in a meeting with Chorgan, leader of the Gatherers, to discuss peace and terms of reintegration into Acamarian society. Brull chose to attend alone, still wary of the potential for a trap, leaving his men behind at the outpost and advising them to avenge him should he not return within ten days. Shortly before departure, he was also made aware of the death of one of his subordinates, Volnoth, though Brull chalked the man's passing up to old age and dispersed his belongings to a fellow Gatherer.
Although initially mocking of Ensign Wesley Crusher, who he referred to as "a child" whose presence "does not inspire my confidence," Brull eventually spoke with the young man while he was completing mathematics homework in Ten Forward. Brull defended the actions of himself and his fellow Gatherers; he firmly believed in the principles of his group, arguing that they represented a freedom of action and belief that his people would not find under the Sovereign's rule. However, he did acquiesce that he desired better for his people, including his sons, and eeking out an existence on piracy and theft was not a sustainable method for them to survive.
Some time later, Brull watched with interest as the Enterprise came under attack from Chorgan's ship, and Picard initially showed restraint in firing back before eventually knocking out the Gatherer vessel's shields. When communications were initially made between the two vessels, Chorgan called Brull a traitor, though he insisted that the Sovereign should be heard out. The impromptu summit was convened aboard Chorgan's ship shortly thereafter, and though the bickering continued for some time between Chorgan and Marouk, it was given pause when Commander William Riker interrupted the proceedings, informing them that Yuta was not who she appeared.
Brull watched as Riker and Yuta spoke, and the latter revealed that she was not merely a servant girl, but had been changed by genetic engineering into a living biological weapon able to kill members of the Lornak, a clan that had wiped out her own, the Tralestas, nearly to the last; Volnoth had been her penultimate victim. As Brull and the others watched, Riker, who had become enamored with Yuta, was forced to vaporize the young woman with a phaser to prevent her from killing Chorgan, her final target. With Brull's help, and with this fresh reminder of the clan warfare that had initially separated the groups, the Gatherers and the greater Acamarian people settled their differences over the negotiating table.
