Brown hole

A brown hole was a dubiously existent, dangerous astronomical object.

In 2381, Starfleet pulled the USS Vancouver from trade negotiations with the Karemma on Deep Space 9 to evacuate a colony in the Hasparga system that was threatened by a brown hole. When Captain Carol Freeman, who had to step in for Captain Nguyen at the last minute, heard about the brown hole, she fruitlessly protested that the phenomenon was "not even a thing!" It later emerged that Vice Admiral Les Buenamigo, who informed Freeman of the alleged crisis, was attempting to sabotage the negotiations with the Karemma by forcing them onto the unprepared Freeman in order to "force" the unveiling of the Texas-class, a gambit that failed when Freeman was able to salvage the negotiations, calling the existence of not only the crisis but the phenomenon itself into question.
