Audit

An audit was any formal investigation that involved counting the number of something. It could be a probe one's financial status, including business dealings, or the number of votes cast in an election.

In the 21st century, signs carried by protestors called for someone to "audit the vote" in a recent election. (SNW: "Strange New Worlds")

In 2372, upon receiving an unexpected visit from Liquidator Brunt, Quark asked whether he had come to do a surprise audit. Brunt later described the FCA investigation which Quark had shielded his mother Ishka from as an "FCA audit". (DS9: "Body Parts")
