Anaximander

The Anaximander, nicknamed the "Nax", was a Federation Defiant-class starship operated by Section 31 during the 24th century.

Service history

In 2382, Section 31 assigned the Anaximander, under the command of Captain William Boimler, to locate and stop the source of the quantum fissures opening throughout the galaxy before they compromised the integrity of the multiverse. They found and closed innumerable rifts, but never caught sight of the culprit. Over time, the ship became crewed by "interdimensional castaways" from multiple quantum realities, a majority of whom were versions of Harry Kim.

After much fruitless searching, the Anaximander crew had a breakthrough when they rescued an alternate version of Beckett Mariner who was an engineer. Mariner had developed a means of forcing a rift to open at a predetermined location, which brought their target, the USS Beagle, to them. Eager to apprehend the Beagle, Boimler had the Anaximander fire on and chase the other vessel through another fissure to the surface of the planet Khwopa. The crews of both ships were subsequently imprisoned by the Khwopians, which gave them the opportunity to understand one another and agree on a plan to return everyone to their home universes.

Meanwhile, an alternate Elim Garak had eluded capture inside the Anaximander and proceeded to neutralize the Khwopians with the aid of an alternate holographic Julian Bashir. However, Lieutenant Harry Kim then commandeered the still-damaged Beagle, seeking to bring all the other Kims to his universe where they could be promoted. The Anaximander gave pursuit and retrieved the other Kims, but was unable to stop Lieutenant Kim from opening a fissure and attempting to enter, destroying the Beagle. The explosion disrupted the rift, threatening to spread destructive soliton waves throughout the multiverse; Boimler decided to use a soliton beam from the Anaximander's main deflector to redirect them all into his own universe, trusting his transporter duplicate Brad Boimler and his friends on the USS Cerritos to handle the crisis. After the rift was stabilized by the USS Cerritos at the cost of it being left permanently open, the Anaximander returned to the prime universe where it and the ship's interdimensional crew -- now including the former crew of the Beagle -- would be stationed at Starbase 80 to take part in the ongoing missions of multiversal exploration. Background information

Anaximander was an ancient Greek philosopher who, among other achievements, speculated on the existence of multiple realities.

This ship may have been the same Defiant-class starship that picked up William Boimler in "Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus", as both ships have similar markings and a lack of external signage.
