Achernar

Achernar, also known as Alpha Eridani, was an inhabited planetary system in the Beta Quadrant. This first magnitude star was the ninth brightest star in Earth's night sky.

Components

Stellar system

Achernar was a binary star system consisting of the primary star Achernar (the proper name for Alpha Eridani A), a B-type dwarf, and its companion star Alpha Eridani B, an A-type dwarf.

Planetary system

In this system, there were at least two planets. One of these planets was Alpha Eridani II. (TOS: "Wolf in the Fold")

History

In the 22nd century, Alpha Eridani II was the site of an United Earth colony. (TOS: "Wolf in the Fold")

Stellar cartography

The Achernar system was visible from Earth in the constellation Eridanus. This system was approximately 139 light years from Sol.

In 2259, the location of this star system was labeled on a stellar cartography chart seen on the USS Enterprise's ready room viewscreen. The system's symbol had a green color, indicating that it had an affiliation with the Romulan Star Empire. (SNW: "Spock Amok")

The system's location was labeled in a Federation star chart that was in Fleet Admiral Kirsten Clancy's office at Starfleet Headquarters in 2399 and on the bridge of the USS Titan in 2401. Achernar was in or near to space claimed by the Romulan Free State. (PIC: "Maps and Legends", "The Next Generation", "Disengage")

Information on this system was derived the episodes, the reference works Star Trek: Star Charts and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library, and real-world sources. The reference works were used extensively in the creation of star charts seen in Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Lower Decks. In the Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Position of the Romulan Empire"; "Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), it was written that the Achernar (Alpha Eridani) system was identified as a Romulan system in a star chart created by Stellar Archive Artist Lsel Essik in 2366 for the Romulan Master Data Catalog.
