Unlocked by Upgrade Crafting (Engineering tree).

Upgrade Modules are extremely important items used for:

1. Upgrading weapons/armor up a tier (increasing stats)
2. Upgrading certain weapons into new weapons (see list)
3. Crafting crew beds
4. Creating certain items/buildings as listed below.

Prior to the mid-to-late game, the primary source of Upgrade Modules will be loot from boxes and treasure chests in the world. Later on, you can create your own in bulk.
