If the Defending Pokémon tries to attack during your opponent's next turn, your opponent flips a coin. If tails, that attack does nothing.

If the Defending Pokémon doesn't have a Char counter on it, flip a coin. If heads, put a Char counter on it. A Char counter requires your opponent to flip a coin after every turn. If tails, put 2 damage counters on the Pokémon with that Char counter. (Char counters stay on the Pokémon as long as it's in play.)

Trivia
- The Char counters placed by Quilava's Char attack can be seen as a precursor for the Burned condition later introduced in the Expedition Base Set. The primary difference between the two as they were introduced are that Char is not a Special Condition, so it remains on a Pokémon even if it moves to the Bench.
- With the release of Sun & Moon, Burned was changed. Currently, Burned puts two damage counters on the Pokémon, then causes that Pokémon's owner to flip a coin. Tails results have no effect, but a heads result causes the Pokémon to recover from Burned. This makes Char counters and Burned more distinct.
Origin
Smokescreen is a move in the Pokémon games that Quilava can learn. This card's English Pokédex entry comes from Pokémon Gold, whereas the Japanese entry comes from Pokémon Silver.
