The Hill of the Lone Star Tree (Japanese: 一本星の丘で…, At the Hill of the Lone Star...), is the first bonus chapter of the seventh volume of Magical Pokémon Journey.

Plot

Long ago, a Quagsire makes a promise to visit a Charmander, Mandy, at the Hill of the Lone-Star Tree after he moves.

Many years later, the Quagsire, called Gramps, travels with a boy named Carob in search of the Lone-Star Tree. Along the way, they come across Peanut, Charmander, Pikachu and Clefairy. Upon seeing Charmander, Gramps pounces on him, calling him Mandy. This leads Carob to explain Gramps has gone senile in his old age, elaborating that before his family moved away, Gramps had fallen in love with a similar-looking Charmander. He asks Peanut for directions to the Hill of the Lone-Star Tree, as they currently have only Gramps's faulty memory to follow, but he is unsure. Instead, Peanut decides to send the Pokémon to search with Carob, as he is too frail to join them.

As they walk, Carob tells the others that Gramps had not spoken of Mandy until he began to lose his memory. Since then, Mandy has become all that he speaks of, and as his family, Carob feels it is important to reunite the two. The group takes a break to allow Gramps to nap. In his sleep, he uses a powerful Earthquake attack on everyone nearby, further angering Charmander.

As they continue traveling, Gramps pounces on various objects, hugging them and calling them Mandy. Right as they reach the end of a cliff, Gramps spots the Hill of the Lone-Star Tree in the distance—where a tree in the shape of a star stands. In his excitement to reach it, Gramps charges toward it, knocking Carob and the Pokémon off of the cliff with him.

After being knocked unconscious by the fall, Charmander wakes up to find himself and the others by a girl named Tamarind. Carob reveals they had gotten themselves snagged on a tree branch, and she had saved them. Tamarind explains she was especially worried about Charmander, whose tail flame had nearly been extinguished. Carob asks Tamarind if she knows Mandy, prompting her to explain she was a member of her family. When Carob asks where Mandy is, she gestures to a grave in front of the Lone-Star Tree.

As the group approaches the grave, Tamarind reveals that Mandy had passed away in her sleep three years prior. She and her family had buried her by the tree because she would always speak of meeting someone special there. Hearing this, Gramps is overcome with emotion. He lies down by the grave and sobs.

Suddenly, light begins to surround the grave, and a disembodied voice calls out for "Cyrus," Gramps's given name. Tamarind and Carob both stare in shock as Mandy's spirit floats down. Mandy grabs hold of Gramps's arms, and the two rise into the air together. She expresses her joy to see him, and he apologizes for taking too long to visit. Mandy assures him that she knew he had not forgotten her, telling him that she is now at peace after having met him. She asks him if he will come see her again, and he agrees. Shortly after, both Mandy and Gramps disappear.

To the surprised Pokémon, Carob reveals that Gramps had not been physically present during their journey. Because he is unable to move in his old age, Gramps has learned how to travel with his soul. Carob explains that when Gramps vanished, he had actually returned to his physical form at home.

Later, Charmander, Pikachu, and Clefairy are seen relaxing with Peanut. Despite his fear of ghosts, Charmander is able to understand the need Gramps felt to see Mandy again. Peanut tells Charmander that if they were ever separated from each other, he would do anything to see him again, and Charmander agrees he would do the same. Charmander's relaxation is cut short when Gramps pounces on him once more. Carob greets the group, saying Gramps is here in his physical form to visit Mandy, while he is visiting Tamarind. Gramps then begins to chase Charmander, and Peanut and Carob gleefully remark how much happier Gramps seems.
