Magnitude (Japanese: マグニチュード Magnitude) is a damage-dealing Ground-type move introduced in Generation II.

Effect

Generation II to IV

Magnitude's power varies based on a randomly selected "magnitude" value ranging from 4 to 10, with 4 having the least power and 10 having the greatest.

Magnitude can hit a Pokémon during the semi-invulnerable turn of Dig, and if it does, it will have its power doubled for that Pokémon.

Generation V to VII

If Magnitude hits a Pokémon during the semi-invulnerable turn of Dig, instead of doubling in power, the damage is doubled instead, resulting in virtually the same effect.

If Grassy Terrain is in effect, Magnitude deals only half the usual damage.

Generation VIII onwards

Magnitude cannot be selected in a battle.

Magnitude damages all other Pokémon in the room, dealing a variable amount of damage dependent on the Magnitude level. In the Rescue Team and Explorers series, Magnitude deals 5, 10, 15, 25, 30, 35 or 40 fixed damage, afterwards multiplying the damage by STAB and type matchup. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, the damage values are 10, 20, 30, 35, 40, 50, and 60; they are unaffected by STAB and type matchup.

Starting in Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, Magnitude deals regular damage, with its power multiplier depending on the Magnitude level: 0.1, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, or 2.0.

Magnitude deals double damage to Pokémon using Dig.

  • At 150 base power, Magnitude 10 has the highest base power of all Ground-type moves.
    • At base power 10, Magnitude 4 has the lowest base power of all Ground-type moves and is tied with Constrict for the lowest fixed base power of any move.
  • Due to the 2004 Chuetsu earthquake, this move, along with Fissure and Earthquake, has not been used in the animated series since AG101 (which itself has never been aired).
