Koji (Japanese: ユウジ Yūji) is a character of the day who appeared in Good 'Quil Hunting.

He was a brash young Trainer who wanted a Cyndaquil, and ended up competing with Ash to catch one in a forest. Even though Ash caught one first, Koji pressured Ash into a battle, with the prize being the Cyndaquil Ash already caught. Against Brock's better judgment, Ash accepted the challenge and had Cyndaquil battle Koji's Sandslash. During the battle, Koji was shown to be a confident Trainer with a powerful Pokémon. He is not a kind Trainer, and pressured his Sandslash to continue the battle even though it was exhausted.

Despite having a disadvantage, Cyndaquil was able to use its speed and Tackle attack to defeat the Sandslash has lost a lot of stamina. Koji then decided to try to steal Cyndaquil anyway in a net, only to get badly burned when it used a Flamethrower at him, causing him to run away. As he fled, Brock yelled after him that he should train himself before training any more Pokémon.

Sandslash

Debut	Good 'Quil Hunting

Koji's sole known Pokémon is Sandslash. He deployed Sandslash in his attempt to capture a wild Cyndaquil. Initially, Sandslash was used to thwart Ash from catching the Cyndaquil, and subsequently, to battle the Cyndaquil after Ash had successfully caught it. During this battle, Sandslash displayed remarkable agility and power. However, its stamina appeared to be exhausted as Cyndaquil demonstrated impressive agility, successfully dodging most of Sandslash's attacks. Despite this, Koji pushed Sandslash to continue the fight. Ultimately, Sandslash's persistence led to its defeat when it became stuck in a tree, allowing Cyndaquil to land a decisive Tackle attack. Brock observed that Sandslash's Slash attack possessed "amazing destructive power," and Koji himself stated that Sandslash's most effective move was Fury Swipes.

Sandslash's known moves are Sand Attack, Poison Sting, Fury Swipes, Slash, Swift, and Scratch.

Trivia

• Koji shares a few similarities with Damian and Shamus, as the three of them are brash and have tried to claim Fire-type first partner Pokémon as their own, ending in rejection by said Pokémon's Flamethrower.
  • The major difference between Koji and the other two is that Damian and Shamus actually owned Fire first partner Pokémon (Charmander and Tepig, respectively), while Koji never actually owned Cyndaquil at any point.
