Cottonee (Japanese: モンメン Monmen) is a dual-type Grass/Fairy Pokémon introduced in Generation V. Prior to Generation VI, it was a pure Grass-type Pokémon.

It evolves into Whimsicott when exposed to a Sun Stone.

Biology

Cottonee is a white, circular Pokémon. It has white, puffy sections on the top of its head and its underside. Behind it is a green, star-shaped section similar to the area where a plant connects to its produce. It has orange, oval-shaped eyes, and furled, notched leaves on the sides of its body.

Cottonee is blown around by the wind because of its lightweight composition. The only circumstance in which it cannot be blown by the wind is when it has been soaked by rain, which weighs it down and makes it soggy. Afterwards, this Pokémon will stay under a tree until it dries, so that it may be blown by the wind again. During the mating season, Cottonee blow in the wind in large groups. Its cotton can be used as a defensive mechanism; when threatened, it will expel cotton as a distraction so that it may escape. The lost cotton will grow back quickly. Cottonee's cotton is used to manufacture top-quality pillows and beds that are soft, puffy, light, and airy. When Cottonee's cotton is weaved together with Eldegoss's cotton, it makes a cloth that is popular with many luxury brands.

Cottonee evolves into Whimsicott.

When he was rejected for being weak, Ash and his friends helped him become stronger so he could impress her, and joined in a mass migration of the species. • Cottonee and its evolved form were designed by Atsuko Nishida.^[1]
• Cottonee and Petilil can be seen as counterparts. They both evolve once using a Sun Stone and share a base stat total of 280. Additionally, Cottonee is exclusive to Pokémon Black, Black 2, Sun, and Ultra Sun, while Petilil is exclusive to Pokémon White, White 2, Moon, and Ultra Moon. They also have similar movesets.
• Cottonee is the only Pokémon whose sprites are different between Pokémon Black & White and Pokémon Black 2 & White 2.
• Cottonee has the lowest base Attack stat of all Grass-type Pokémon.

Origin

Cottonee is based on a ball of cotton and a sheep;^[1] the connection appears to be made because both cotton and sheep produce clothing material. Its leaves may also allude to the lamb's ear plant, while the way it lets the wind move itself is similar to dandelion seeds and clouds.

Name origin

Cottonee may be derived from cotton, cottony, cottonweed, and possibly wee (small).

Monmen may be derived from 木綿 momen (cotton).
