Coin (Game Corner)

A coin[a] (Japanese: コイン coin) is a type of currency used at Game Corners in the core series games. Coins can typically only be obtained and used if the player has a Coin Case in the Bag.
In the core series games
Coins are used to play the games available at the Celadon Game Corner, Goldenrod Game Corner, Mauville Game Corner, and Veilstone Game Corner. They can also be exchanged for prizes, including Pokémon, TMs, and other items. Coins can only be obtained, used for games, or exchanged for prizes if the player has a Coin Case in their Bag.
Coin availability
Coins can be bought in amounts of 50 for $1000 or, starting in Generation II, in increments of 500 for $10000. They can also be found in game machines in the European versions of Platinum and Korean versions of the Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum Versions. The player cannot buy coins in the Korean and western releases of HeartGold and SoulSilver.
Several people may give the player free coins, normally ten or twenty at a time. In Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen, the player can collect hidden coins dropped on the floor of the Game Corner.
These are the coins available in each Game Corner:
- Rocket Game Corner / Celadon Game Corner:
- In Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow, there are 50 gift coins and 230 hidden coins. The Itemfinder is unable to detect the hidden coins. In addition, there are 30 unobtainable hidden coins in the game data: a tile with 10 coins is unreachable, and another tile is programmed to contain 40 coins but only awards 20 coins.
- In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, there are 50 gift coins and 250 hidden coins. The Itemfinder can detect the hidden coins.
- In Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver, there are no gift or hidden coins in this Game Corner.
- Goldenrod Game Corner:
- In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, there are 18 gift coins.
- Mauville Game Corner:
- In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, there are 20 gift coins.
- Veilstone Game Corner:
- In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, there are 70 gift coins. In the Korean versions and in the European Platinum, there are 5-20 gift coins repeatable daily.

Trivia
- In the Generation I games, coins are stored as individual items (index number 59, hex: 3B) in the game. It may be of note that when forced into a Poké Mart, they are available for purchase at the price of $10 per coin. This is half the price of coins in the final versions of the games. When forced as items, coins cannot be used by the player, nor can they be stored back into a Coin Case.
Notes
- ↑ Capitalized as "Coin" in the Generation III core series games and Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.
