Bird (type)
- Not to be confused with Flying (type).
The Bird type (Japanese: とりタイプ Bird type) is an unused type that exists only in the code of the Generation I and II games, and has not been present since. Most notably, the glitch Pokémon MissingNo. and 'M have the Bird type as their primary type in the English versions of Pokémon Red and Blue.
Battle properties
The Bird type is neutrally effective against all types and all types are neutrally effective against it.
In the games
In the Generation I and II core series games, it is an unused physical type with index number 0x06, after Rock and before Bug. The name for the type was dummied out in the non-English European releases of the Generation II games.
The following glitch Pokémon have the Bird type as one of their types. This occurs because the game reads the stats for these glitch Pokémon past the end of the Pokémon species data structure, where the value 0x06 is read as their primary type. In all other language and game versions, no glitch Pokémon species in those games would cause a value of 0x06 to be read as one of its types.
- In the English versions of Pokémon Red and Blue, MissingNo. and 'M are dual Bird/Normal-type.
- In the French version of Pokémon Yellow, ╔ô y' ô 9ゥ is a dual Bird/Glitch (hex 3E) type.
- In the Japanese versions of Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, ????? (FC) is dual Bird/Normal (hex 8E)-type.
Additionally, glitch Pokémon which cause the value 0x86 to be read as a type will display the string for the Bird type as one of their types, as the highest bit of the byte value is ignored when type names are displayed in these games.
In the English versions of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, there is a localization error in the dialogue of the Gym guide in Vermilion Gym that causes him to refer to Flying-type Pokémon as Bird-type Pokémon. This was corrected in the non-English European versions and in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.
| Games | Japanese | English |
|---|---|---|
| RGBY | ひこう タイプ みず タイプは あいしょうが わるいぜ! |
Birds and water Pokémon are at risk! |
| FRLG | Bird/Water-type Pokémon match poorly against the Electric type. | |
| PE | ひこうタイプ みずタイプは 相性が 悪いぜ! |
Flying- and Water-type Pokémon don't do well matched up against Electric types. |
In animation
The type was mentioned in Song of Origin, the Japanese ending theme for Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. However, it's likely an error owing to the song's inaccurate listing of Pokemon types.
Trivia
- In the German localization of Pokémon Red and Blue only, all instances of Vogel-Pokémon ("Bird Pokémon"), both in dialogue and in Pokédex entries such as that of Zapdos, are written with small capital letters (which are otherwise only used for reserved words such as types).
- In the Western localizations of Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald as well as the English, French, Italian, and German versions of Pokémon XD, all instances of "Bird Pokémon" (or its respective localization) are written in all caps (which is otherwise only used for reserved words such as types), except for the Pokédex entries of the legendary birds.
