    Tux, the Linux mascot.

Linux is a piece of software that powers a number of Operating Systems. Any time you've used an Android smartphone, an Amazon Fire Stick, a Roku streaming box, or a Steam Deck you’ve used a device that ships with Linux by default. Unlike big name operating systems such as Microsoft Windows and Mac OS, Linux is far lower profile as a brand among consumers, despite being widespread.

In terms of media, if Linux is involved, it is usually for one of the following reasons.

    • By far the most common reason is powering a server or other network infrastructure used to digitally deliver content to the user.
    • Linux often powers devices meant for media consumption. More rarely it is used to power game consoles not made by Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo, especially handhelds and microconsoles.
    • Linux is sometimes used in the media creation process, such as for powering computers in a render farm.
    • Some tech oriented media covers Linux itself. For example Linus Tech Tips occasionally has Linux focused episodes.
    • A small but vocal group of people run Linux on their personal computers. Some game developers release Linux compatible versions of their games.

Linux also has a Penguin Mascot named Tux. Tux sometimes appears or even stars in free and open source games such as SuperTuxKart and Tux Racer.

Compare and contrast with UNIX, which Linux is like but not of, or the Berkeley Software Distribution.
