Etymology 1

From Proto-West Germanic *stallijan, from Proto-Indo-European *stel-. Equivalent to steall (position, place) +‎ -an. For the phonetic development of *-allij-, compare Early West Saxon fiellan, fielde, Anglian fellan, felde. Accordingly, stellan, stelde is the Anglian version of *stiellan.

A distinct past tense form stealde (Anglian stalde) is found for the related verb stellan, the expected outcome of Proto-West Germanic *stalljan in all dialects.
