Uncertain. Possibly from a Vulgar Latin root *rhizomāre, from Ancient Greek ῥίζα (rhíza, root, base, foundation)—compare Greek ρίζωμα (rízōma, rhizome). Alternatively through metathesis, from a Vulgar Latin root *remediāre, from Latin remedium. Compare Aromanian aradzim, arãdzimari.
