From Prakrit 𑀧𑀁𑀟𑀺𑀅 (paṃḍia, “a wise man”), from Sanskrit पाण्ड्यः (pāṇḍyaḥ, “best of the learned”), पाण्डित्य (pāṇḍitya, “cleverness”) or पण्डित (paṇḍita). Doublet of paṇḍita.
