Inherited from Proto-Bantu *-dɪ̀mɪda (applicative of *-dɪ̀ma). By surface analysis, -lima (to cultivate) +‎ -ira (applicative suffix for verbs where the penultimate vowel of the stem is 'a', 'i' or 'u').
