From earlier gwrthfun, from gwrth- (“against”) + a root *mun (“intent”) (the same element that appears in arofun (“purpose”), gofuned (“vow”)), from Proto-Celtic *monyos, from Proto-Indo-European *men- (“thought, mind”).
