Etymology
Attested since the 13th century. Probably from Latin viticula, diminutive of vītis (“vine”), under the influence of a descendant of Proto-Germanic *wiþiz (“cord, rope, thong”). Cognate with Portuguese guedelha and Spanish guedeja.
