From Vulgar Latin *dissēperāre, from Late Latin dissēparāre, from Latin dis- + sēparō. Cognate to Italian disceverare, Old Spanish dessebrar, Old French dessevrer. Cf. also Galician xebrar, Old Spanish exebrar, Occitan sebrar, French sevrer. Compare the borrowing separtar.
