cmilem

Albanian

Etymology

Attested first in Bogdani's work as: ...tue u cmilunë prej Betlemi (...while moving from Bethlehem). Related to Arbëreshë zmol (to stagger) with an apophonic relation, both from a *cmiel where cmilem represents the mediopassive and zmol comes from the aorist. Prefixes c- and z- are phonetic variants of the same formant, but c- has an affective value. Further origin of the two verbs remains obscure.[1]

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈt͡smilɛm/

Verb

cmilem (aorist u cmila, participle cmilur) (mediopassive)

  1. to arise, to start moving, to get going
