cirris

Albanian

Etymology

Word present in southern Tosk. Jokl and Pokorny connect it with ther and its family, with the usual th:c transformation in Albanian.[1][2] Camarda brings the version ciris and çiris (to scratch) and puts them close to Greek ξυρίζω (xyrízo, to shave).[3] In addition, Çabej notes the Greek -ίζω (-ízo) suffix influence, and leaves open the possibility of a derivation from cingërís, with the consonantal group ngr assimilated in rr, or even an elementary formation.[4]
