Etymology

From Old Norse bryti, a nominalization of brytja (to cut up, slaughter), from Proto-Germanic *brutjaną (to break, divide).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈbryːtə/

Noun

bryti m (genitive bryta, plural brytar)

  1. (Scania) bailiff, steward
    • c. 1210, "Uil bryti skilias", Scanian Law, chapter 231.
[] þa fari brytin til tuiggia þinga []
[] then the bailiff must attend two assemblies []

indefinite definite indefinite definite
nominative bryti brytin brytar brytarnir
accusative bryta brytan bryta brytana
dative bryta brytanum brytum brytunum
genitive bryta brytans bryta brytanna

The declension is unstable and should be treated as a guide. The case system was gradually being simplified from four to two cases. Even some nominative markers were sporadically kept in the Scanian dialect, although they mostly were replaced with the accusative endings from Old Norse.
