atkarīgs

Calque of German abhängig (“dependent”), coined at the end of the 19th century from atkār(t) (“to hang down”) +‎ -īgs (with atkārt from at- +‎ kārt (“to hang”)), together with the related term atkarība.^[1]

1. dependent (such that it finds itself under the power, authority or influence of some person, group, nation, country, etc.)

   atkarīgās valstis ― dependent countries

   būt materiāli atkarīgam no vecākiem ― to be financially dependent on one's parents

   atkarīgās tautas alkst atbrīvoties no ārzemju monopola kundzības ― dependent nations crave to free themselves from the domination of foreign monopolies

2. dependent (such that it is determined by other factors, phenomena, etc.)

   atkarīgais vārds ― dependent noun (in a noun phrase)

   Indijā raža ir atkarīga no lietus, ko atnes musoni ― in India, (food) production is dependent on the rain that is brought by the monsoons

   tikai no pašiem cilvēkiem viss atkarīgs ― everything depends (lit. is dependent) only on the people themselves
