Etymology

Probably from Zahn (tooth) +‎ stochen (to pick; to stoke, stir) +‎ -er (agent suffix). The verb is the (now uncommon) simplex of stochern (to pick, poke repeatedly). Alternatively it could also be a haplology for *Zahnstocherer.
