Etymology

  • Per Derksen 2008, cognate with Lithuanian kam̃pas (corner), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kamptas, from Proto-Indo-European *kh₂em- (to curve, bend)[1] Has been further compared with Ancient Greek κανθός (kanthós, eye's corner) (phonetically problematic), Proto-Celtic *kantos (edge).
