Coda *HC, if correct, points to an earlier root *Hreh₁- suffixed in *-t-. However, the reconstruction is uncertain. Compare *h₂reh₁- (“to arrange”) or *h₃er- (“to rise”). Possibly a substrate word given the irregularities.
