Etymology

Cognate with Proto-Samic *rëtē (< *rita), further origin uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Finno-Permic *rita, if related to Eastern Mari лӧдӧ (lödö, trap, snare) and Western Mari лӱды (lüdy, trap,snare). Alternatively, possibly borrowed from Proto-Germanic *wrīþaną.
