Proto-Finnic

Etymology

Unknown. Compared with Proto-Germanic *failijaz (compare Old High German feili) or Proto-Germanic *fēlijaz (NW *fālijaz, compare Old High German fāli), but neither is likely to be the origin due to semantic and phonetic issues; it is not even certain whether such words existed in Proto-Germanic.[1]
