From earlier *a-ḳăyd, from Proto-Afroasiatic *ḳid-/*ḳayd- (young goat, sheep).[1] Cognate with Proto-Semitic *naḳad- (weak sheep, shepherd) (Akkadian 𒈾𒆤 (nāqidum)) and Proto-Omotic *ḳid-.
