Reconstruction:Proto-Berber/am-an
Proto-Berber
Etymology
From earlier *amay-ăn, from Proto-Afroasiatic *maʔ- (“water”). Within Pan-Berber, compare Guanche aemon, ahemon. Sometimes compared to Old Nubian ⲁⲙⲁⲛ- (aman-), but the resemblance is likely a coincidence given the otherwise complete lack of evidence for ancient Berber-Nubian contact.
