Usage notes

  • Idiolectally, some speakers may prefer Postkasten in the sense “box for mail collection” and Briefkasten in the sense “box for mail delivery”. On the whole, however, both terms are interchangeable, with Briefkasten clearly predominant. Information on the regional distribution of Postkasten is conflicting; according to Duden it is “especially northern German”, according to DWDS “especially Austrian”.
