Jogaila
Lithuanian
Etymology
(Baltic origin:) Composed of the two stems joti (“to ride horseback”) + gailas (“strong, powerful”). Compare Belarusian Ягайла (Jahajla) and Polish Jagiełło.
(Germanic origin:) Some Germanist scholars who study Baltic onomastics, especially Raymond Schmittlein, claimed that the name Jogaila and its Slavic cognates are of Gothic origin and that they are composed of agis (“fear”) + gails (“lively, wayward, arrogant”) (cognated to Old High German Agil). This perspective disputes analyses that construct the name solely from Balto-Slavic onomastics.[1]
