Hellebarde
German
Alternative forms
- Hellebarte (archaic)
- Halbarte, Halmbarte, Helmbarte (specialist with distinction; otherwise archaic)
Etymology
From Middle High German helle(n)barte, from older helmbarte, from helm (“stalk”) + barte (“axe”). The modern -d- is Central and Low German (compare Middle Low German hēlenbārde) and/or influenced by French hallebarde, itself from the Middle High German. The stress pattern, too, may hint at French influence, though stress shifts in compound words also occur natively.
