Etymology

By surface analysis, Ancient Greek κάλλος (kállos, beautiful) +‎ Ancient Greek -ειδής (-eidḗs, adjectival suffix) +‎ -a f. Compare Latin callidus.

Coined by French zoologist and entomologist Pierre André Latreille and by French general, then entomologist, 19th century Pierre François Marie Auguste Dejean in 1824.
